
MSc in General Dental Practice
The Master of Science degree in General Dental Practice is awarded by Aston University, Birmingham, United Kingdom. This programme is aimed at the busy General Dental Practitioner wishing to develop a deeper understanding of evidence based general dental practice.
On successful completion, the MSc degree will permit use of the postnominals MSc (Gen Dent)
The MSc is completed via a 2 year (part time) blended learning pathway. The first year of the pathway (Part 1) is delivered by the Academy. The second year of the pathway (Part 2) is delivered by Aston University.
The MSc programme is open to all members of the dental team who satisfy the entry requirements.
PART 1 - 12 MONTHS

Module 1: Medical Law & Ethics (online delivery). 15 credits
Module 2: Evidence Based Dentistry (online delivery). 15 credits
TERM 2 (January - June):
Module 3: Applied Occlusion (online delivery). 15 credits
Module 4. Endodontics in General Dental Practice (online delivery). 15 credits
Module 5: Periodontology for the General Dental Practitioner (online delivery). 15 credits
To be completed by the last day of the academic year:
Module 6: Submission of 6 Clinical Case Reports. 15 credits
PART 2 - 12 MONTHS
DELIVERED BY ASTON UNIVERSITY

Starts September
Module 1: Advanced Research Skills. 30 credits
Module 2: Research project and dissertation. 60 credits
In December, for Part 2, there will be a face-to-face Study Design workshop held in Cambridge.
Regular tutorials and contact classes take place (using Microsoft Teams) during Part 2.
Full and partial exemptions from Part 1 are available to Fellows, Associate Fellows and Members of the College of General Dentistry (CGDent) and to holders of other accredited Level 7 Certificates and Diplomas in dentistry.
The EduQual accredited exit qualification of Level 7 Diploma in General Dental Practice can be awarded if a delegate reaches a pass grade (45%) in Part 1 but does not attain a grade of 60% or more to allow progression into Part 2, or if a delegate decides to withdraw from the course after successfully completing Part 1. In such circumstances an exit qualification conferment fee of £2,500 + VAT will apply for any exit award applications made up to 1 September 2025.
A grade of 60% or more is required in all modules of the Part 1 program to allow continuation into Part 2
